Lasers have been used for numerous medical applications throughout the body. Recently, an innovative technique utilizing laser energy delivered endovenously (directly inside the vein) has been developed to remove varicose veins. It will close the varicose vein, so blood can reroute through healthy veins. A 1470 nm diode laser will be used to deliver the laser energy via a small laser fiber.
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is performed under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office. There is little to no scarring and there is a relative short recovery period after the procedure.
EVLT is an outpatient varicose vein treatment which means you can resume your normal activities almost immediately. Schedule an appointment or call our office at (972)736-9980 to learn more today. Endovenous laser ablation is a process by which we close a malfunctioning vein which is causing a patient’s symptoms of venous insufficiency. By closing the malfunctioning vein, we reroute the blood to the deep veins and this allows there not to be blood pooling in the lower extremities. The pooling effect is a primary cause for most of the patient’s symptoms. The way that we close the veins with a laser is by putting a small iv catheter into the vein, and then we put a little laser fiber out the tip of the catheter. Then after we put some dilute lidocaine called tumescent anesthesia around the vein. We turn the laser on, then pull it back slowly which seals the vein shut. Patients will walk in and walk out of the clinic on the same day. They can expect some discomfort and bruising along the ablation site for a few days to a week afterwards. Many patients experience immediate relief of their symptoms in their lower leg following the ablation procedure.
