Is Sclerotherapy Effective in Treating Veins?

Sclerotherapy is an in-office procedure performed at the Flower Mound Vein Center to treat varicose and spider veins. You’ll need to schedule an initial consultation with our vein specialist to determine if this is your best treatment option, but most people are candidates for sclerotherapy and the success rate is high.

How Does Sclerotherapy Get Rid of Spider Veins?

During a sclerotherapy session, Dr. Handley will inject a solution into the spider or small varicose vein. The blood vessels swell and clot, then they will collapse and fade. The procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes depending on how many veins are injected.

What to Expect from Sclerotherapy

Before the procedure, you shouldn’t wear lotion and you should avoid taking certain medications like aspirin and ibuprofen. For a few days after sclerotherapy, you cannot do any aerobic activity, take hot baths, or have direct sun exposure. Compression stockings may be recommended. Veins may become hard or look brown and may disappear after a few months.

Spider Vein Treatment Effectiveness

Sclerotherapy performed at the Flower Mound Vein Center is very effective in getting rid of spider and varicose veins. About 50-80% of spider and varicose veins injected during sclerotherapy are removed. Smaller spider or varicose veins can respond to treatment in less than one to two months, and larger varicose veins may take three to four month to heal.

Dr. Handley is very experienced in sclerotherapy in addition to ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy can be done to treat large varicose veins with a greater chance of success than standard sclerotherapy. A foam solution is used instead of liquid and our vein specialist uses an ultrasound to guide the foam injection.
