A Flower Mound Vein Specialist Shares Top Vein Disease Treatments

Any discussion of vein disease treatment has to cover a lot of ground, because there is such a range of treatment options.

For example, there are conservative treatments that focus on bringing the symptoms of varicose veins or other vein diseases more under control with diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and the use of compression stockings to reduce pain and swelling in the legs. Then there are more aggressive treatments that focus on permanent removal of the diseased veins themselves. Figuring out which treatment options are right for you is an interactive process between you and your Flower Mound vein specialist. Finding the right treatment depends on many factors, including how advanced your vein disease is, what your personal goals are in seeking treatment, and many other factors.

To make you feel better about modern methods, take a look back at the “bad old days” of vein disease treatment

To really appreciate the advances that have been made in vein disease treatment in Texas in recent years, all one has to do is look back at what “state of the art” was only a few years ago. At that time if you wanted to permanently eliminate your varicose veins, the only method available to do so was called “vein stripping,” which involved going to a hospital and undergoing general anesthesia while a surgeon made deep incisions along the full length of each varicose vein and then scraped away the diseased tissue with a scalpel. Not only was this process as painful as it sounds, the results were often terrible, often leaving scars that were as unattractive as the varicose veins themselves.

Modern treatments are nothing like this

Today, most forms of vein disease can be treated without ever having to go to a hospital, using minimally-invasive procedures that are so painless that in many cases no anesthesia at all is necessary. For example, when varicose veins and spider veins are treated with sclerotherapy, a tiny catheter (smaller than a flu shot needle) is inserted into the diseased vein, guided into place using ultrasound, and then a sealing liquid is inserted that causes the vein to collapse. Within a few weeks the now-sealed veins are automatically absorbed into surrounding tissues and disappear, while healthier veins in the area take over the job of routing blood back to your heart and lungs. All of this can be accomplished in the comfort of our Flower Mound offices in about an hour.

Another common procedure used to treat varicose veins (and to remove blood clots forming as a result of other vein diseases) is endovenous laser treatment, or EVLT. This procedure is also minimally-invasive, and involves inserting a tiny catheter into place and then either sealing the diseased veins or destroying the blood clots using heat or laser light. Again, the use of endovenous (inside the veins) techniques means that no deep incisions need to be made and that in most cases little or no anesthesia is needed. There is also no need for a “recovery period,” and most patients simply walk out of our offices afterwards and return to work or their normal lives.
